A small group of women and I are planning a bike tour from DC to Montreal to focus
on local alternatives to the current unsustainable, industrial agriculture model,
in which most Americans receive their food. We would like to investigate,
interview, document, and interact with innovative projects and communities that
work on issues of urban food security and local markets.
We will be using bicycles as our means of transportation to demonstrate the
alternatives to our present fossil fuel intensive use of energy. We also plan to
document our bike tour investigations through audio and digital recording that
will be distributed through our website for public access.
In the end, we plan to distribute a documentary film with the assistance of the
PBS-Road Trip Nation program, promoting it as a resource for academic
institutions, and in our own initiatives in D.C. We hope to use this research to
help DC along in a local foods movement in much needed urban areas. We would also
like to build up an urban, local food network throughout the east coast in hopes
of collaboration and to help foster a grassroots support base.
Please contact me if anyone might know of current projects taking place in the
Northeast, especially in Conneticut and Vermont, and places that might be willing
to financially support us. We are also open and excited to meet any one who will
be along our general route and interested in our project. We would love to share
stories and meals with friends. Thanks and hope to hear from anyone!!
